After learning Otto had another nightmare, Lu Mian's gentle expression showed a faint, almost imperceptible bitterness.
He reached out, brushing away the dark circles under Otto's eyes. He opened his mouth as if to speak, then sighed softly.
"It must have been hard on you."
Otto's gaze flickered as he pulled back. "No matter how hard it is, it's never worse than that damn potion."
Lu Mian chuckled, his tone light. "It's still early. Don't you want to sleep a bit longer?"
"No," Otto said, "come talk with me?"
"About what?"
"...Well, do you have any... preference for women?"
"...?"
Lu Mian froze at the abrupt question. "Where did that come from?"
"Just curious," Otto replied with a childlike innocence.
Lu Mian wasn't bothered by the question. He rubbed his smooth chin, thinking about his life. Aside from Kallen, he realized he'd never seriously looked at any other woman.
He had no time to think about love in this collapsing world. Between survival and carrying others, romance felt distant and irrelevant.
As for Otto's "Cecilia complex"? Lu Mian scoffed internally.
But then, a face appeared in his mind—a foolish, but undeniably elegant figure.
If he had to pick, perhaps it would be... Kiana Kaslana.
Anyone who's ever played *Honkai Impact 3rd* knows there's no avoiding the main heroine and poster girl.
Liking and loving aren't the same. But if fate allowed it, Lu Mian wouldn't mind meeting Kiana.
Yet just as that snowy-white figure surfaced, it was replaced by the image of a slim, golden-haired youth whose tear-filled eyes mirrored every emotion.
Their eyes met in memory—speechless, heavy.
After a long moment, Lu Mian exhaled and reached to ruffle Otto's hair—but stopped halfway.
"My whole life is already tied to you and Kallen. I don't want to involve anyone else."
He took back his wish to meet Kiana.
If anything... he hoped she *never* appears.
Otto didn't know what Lu Mian was thinking, but a faint smile curved on his lips.
A smile as soft as the breeze, clearer than starlight.
Time passed.
Another half month slipped by.
The experiment between you and Otto had succeeded.
At the one-month mark, the world's first anti-Honkai Plague vaccine was finally complete.
You high-fived each other, embraced, cheered—you tried every celebration under the sun.
And then you remembered: you had to call Kallen.
You hadn't meant to leave her out. She had just been... incredibly busy lately.
Under your guidance, Kallen had founded the **Saint Church of the Cross**, dedicated to combating the spread of the Honkai Plague. The scale and stress were far greater than expected—even her Kaslana constitution left her exhausted and mentally drained.
And the high-ranking elites? Useless. You could only rely on her.
You felt bad. So you and Otto decided not to tell her about the experiment.
You wanted it to be a surprise.
Inside the house, you, Otto, and Kallen sat around a circular table. A small vial containing the purple-colored vaccine sat at its center.
Silence reigned.
You and Otto had already explained everything. You waited for Kallen to respond.
She, on the other hand, was still trying to digest the weight of what she had just heard.
After a long pause, her tired blue eyes widened slightly.
"You're saying... you've really developed a cure for the Honkai Plague?"
Lu Mian nodded gently. "Mn."
Her gaze returned to the vial. Her cherry lips parted. "Then... why haven't we distributed it yet? Are there side effects? Do you need help?"
Without waiting for an answer, she stood and placed a hand on her chest in solemn resolve.
She had witnessed far too many tragedies on the frontlines. Now, faced with hope, all she could think about was action.
But you and Otto had deeper concerns.
You exchanged a glance. In the end, Lu Mian stood, walked to Kallen's side, and gently guided her back to her seat.
He softly massaged her temples to ease her fatigue.
Kallen murmured in response but didn't resist, letting him work.
Otto sat to the side, watching the scene. "It's sweet," he thought. "Annoyingly sweet."
He hated it.
It wasn't the first time he wanted to time-travel and strangle his younger self. It wouldn't be the last either.
Once Kallen relaxed slightly, Lu Mian spoke again:
"You're right. The vaccine should be deployed immediately. We've prepared everything. But before that, we need your help—specifically, I want you and Otto to introduce the vaccine to the public together."
To you, those titles and reputation might seem meaningless—but for Otto and Kallen, they hold weight. They can be wielded.
In the right hands, they are powerful tools.
Kallen frowned slightly, immediately picking up on the implication.
The warmth in her face turned hesitant.
"I didn't do anything... How could I take credit for this?"
But it's not about the credit.
If you weren't who you are—if you weren't so kind-hearted—we wouldn't have even cared about how many people died.
Lu Mian smiled. His words didn't match his true thoughts.
"You taking this title is for your own good. But if you won't take the credit, Otto won't either."
"Eh?"
Kallen blinked, confused.
She wasn't dumb, but sometimes, she wasn't the best at reading nuance.
Lu Mian smoothed her hair.
"It doesn't matter to me. Reputation means nothing to me."
"Otto, despite being the Bishop's son, has no real backing. If he gains fame, it'll be more harmful than helpful."
"But you... you're different. Your father is Siegfried Kaslana—the strongest warrior alive. If you step up, the entire Kaslana bloodline steps up with you. You'll be a shield for Otto, too."
Kallen clenched her small fists and puffed up her chest, pretending to understand. "Then I'll do it!"
You and Otto shared a look. Clearly, she didn't get all the details.
But that was fine.
The goal was to get her to say yes.
And that much... she understood.
