Using *yourself* as a human experiment to suppress a Honkai outbreak?

Solving problems this way is ideal—yet equally naive.

Always dreaming of saving the world is noble—yet equally innocent.

With time, Otto and Kallen would inevitably grow up and face a world that is neither kind nor beautiful.

But…

As long as you exist, Otto can still be childish.

As long as you exist, Kallen can still be innocent.

They will both forge their own paths, distinct from the one you hope for.

And you are their final safeguard.

[…]

Your constitution—no, the nature of Void Archives—is unique. It allows you to internalize the Honkai infection, treating the Black Death as a special form of Honkai erosion without succumbing to it.

You can proactively neutralize the infection within your body.

When experiments are needed, you act as a standard Honkai patient. When they're not, you're indistinguishable from a normal human.

This dramatically improves the effectiveness of Otto's research.

The experiments progressed steadily.

To avoid descending into unethical paths, you chose to blend Eastern and Western traditions—combining medicinal herbs with scientific methodology.

In terms of effort, you worked harder than anyone: six trials per day, even more than you ate.

Before long, half a month passed.

The autumn winds blew across a withering world. The cold night couldn't be completely lit by the lamps—but they still brought a faint warmth and hope to this age of plague and darkness.

In the specially prepared medical chamber, Lu Mian sat facing Otto, who wore a custom-designed protective suit.

The forty-fifth compound—comprising Snake Tooth Grass and Epimedium—was ready. Lu Mian glanced at Otto, then at the thick herbal decoction in her hand. With a frown, she downed it all.

Moments later, her previously calm expression twisted in pain as she vomited a mouthful of black blood.

Otto instinctively stood up—but paused midway, sat back down, collected a sample, and tremblingly pulled out a notebook to record the data.

His handwriting was jagged and unsteady—uglier than anything he'd written in his life. But the entire notebook was filled with this kind of writing.

After ensuring the sample was stored and the experiment validated, Otto stood up again to check Lu Mian's condition.

The hand he extended was gently repelled by a golden glow.

"Wait until I stabilize," she said softly.

[…]

After some time, the pain on Lu Mian's face gradually subsided. She turned to Otto with a familiar smile.

Otto hesitated, then smiled faintly back. That smile carried weariness he couldn't hide.

When all the data was processed and the lab disinfected, the two returned home together.

Otto collapsed on the bed, draping his arm over his eyes to shield them from the light.

Lu Mian glanced at him and blocked the lamp's glow.

"Our progress is fast. We'll succeed soon," Otto said. "Let's take a short break?"

Lu Mian, seated at her desk, looking out at the stars under the night wind, turned and smiled.

"You don't want to see Kallen recover faster?" she teased.

Enduring pain and watching your life burn out—it's difficult for anyone. You're human, too. You're afraid. You're not especially strong-willed, and you could easily lose control in a snowfield of sorrow.

And once rest begins, inertia sets in. Experiments might never restart.

So you persist.

That's what you think. But Otto hears something completely different.

When Lu Mian finished speaking, Otto's eyes grew even more exhausted. A darker look overtook his expression.

"Are you that concerned about Kallen?"

One second. Two seconds. Three seconds.

No response.

After three seconds, Otto removed his arm, only to find Lu Mian had pulled a chair to his bedside.

She was clearly annoyed. She reached out and roughly tousled his hair like a scolding elder.

"You ask me? You're the one who ran crying to your Night Butterfly, saying you didn't want Kallen to be sad anymore. Do you think I'd have gone this far otherwise?"

"You say that, and just wait. Next time, if you hang Kallen from the rafters, I won't stop you. I'll make you regret it forever!"

She cursed nonstop, hands still rubbing his head.

Otto stayed silent and shifted slightly so they were more comfortable. Neither of them noticed the faint smiles forming on their lips.

*Time—please stop. You are beautiful.*

As the bickering faded, Otto's eyelids grew heavier and heavier… until he finally fell asleep.

When Lu Mian noticed, she halted her motions. Her expression softened with quiet tenderness.

She gently tucked in Otto's blanket and smoothed his disheveled blond hair.

Then she slumped into the chair like a dying old man, guarding the flickering light and counting each heartbeat.

Only now did exhaustion show on her face.

"One hundred years… that's enough."

———

"Otto! Otto!"

He heard the familiar voice calling and opened his eyes.

Darkness. He stood alone.

Far away, Lu Mian waved at him from a beam of light.

Suddenly, countless eyes emerged from the void, locking onto him.

A cold sweat beaded on Otto's forehead. He instinctively stepped forward, moving toward the light… toward her.

But no matter how far he walked, the distance between them never changed. The ground stretched endlessly.

He was swallowed by darkness.

When Otto opened his eyes again, he found himself beside Lu Mian, bathed in golden light.

But his heart trembled with unease.

Before he could react, Lu Mian gave him a gentle smile—then placed a short sword into his hand.

She wrapped both hands around his own.

Otto's pupils contracted violently.

"Pfft—!"

The next moment, the short sword plunged into Lu Mian's chest.

His world shattered.

———

"...Hah!"

Otto jolted upright from the bed.

He was awake.

Dim light surrounded him. Lu Mian sat at his side, gently wiping the sweat from his brow.

Feeling the genuine concern in that touch, Otto slowly calmed down. His pounding heart slowed. His ragged breath eased.

"Another nightmare?"

"…Yeah."
