Gu Junming comforted, "It's all right, Grandpa. Today's incident was just an accident. Now Auntie and my sister-in-law are both fine. My sister-in-law is already better, don't worry."
"As long as they're okay! Otherwise, I really wouldn't know what to do." The old man was quite upset.
If this gets out, and people say that just because I wanted some dumplings, I almost caused my pregnant granddaughter-in-law to miscarry, wouldn't that be a laughingstock?
When he expressed his worries, Gu Junming immediately laughed and said, "Grandpa, what are you thinking! It's not that serious! It's just some dumplings! I haven't had home-cooked meals for ages. Thank you, Auntie, the filling is quite tasty. Grandpa, go to sleep."
"That's good to hear, I'm heading to bed!" Gu Dongfang said as he left.
Sun Chan told Gu Junming, "I'll go upstairs to check. See if my sister-in-law hasn't eaten either? I'll bring some dumplings over, and maybe some congee—should I make some?"
"No need to bother, there is formula in the house, just prepare some of that," Gu Junming said.
Sun Chan nodded, prepared a plate of dumplings and a cup of formula. As she was about to deliver it, she stopped, realizing something wasn't right.
She couldn't just care for her sister-in-law and ignore her mother-in-law, or that would cause more trouble later.
So, she prepared two portions and first took them to Gu Juntao's room. Gu Zishan was outside, seeing Sun Chan busy around, hesitated for a moment, and didn't go in, unsure what to say to his wife, and decided to sleep to avoid another fight.
Gu Juntao was there comforting his wife, Yang Hongying, who had already woken up. Upon hearing the commotion downstairs, she got anxious, wanting to go help several times, but Gu Juntao held her down on the bed.
"Please listen to me and rest well."
Yang Hongying protested, "I'm fine! It's just a few dumplings, not serious."
"That's not okay either," Gu Juntao insisted. "Don't worry about my mom, everything's fine. Just take care of yourself for our baby."
Yang Hongying felt uneasy, not understanding why hearing her mother-in-law's words scared her into fainting. She didn't realize she had mild depression and that any slight remark from her mother-in-law could greatly affect her mood.
"I'm really afraid my mother-in-law will blame me, call me pretentious..."
Gu Juntao suddenly held her tight, saying, "Don't think like that, if there's blame, it's all on me. From now on, I'll be with you during my breaks and won't let you run around. Until you have the baby, I won't let you come here freely!"
Just then, someone behind them said, "What's that supposed to mean? Are you blaming me for calling your wife over? Is this place a dragon's lair?"
The couple paused, then turned to see Wang Guihua weakly leaning at the door, teary-eyed. Her clothes were baggy like others, she had not been well—misunderstood by her husband, given the cold shoulder by her father-in-law—she had become skin and bones.
"You just hate me, always seeking chances to hurt your precious wife. I won't see you again." Wang Guihua, now cold and disillusioned, felt that her son had utterly abandoned her for his wife. Her lifelong hopes dashed, she cried in heartbreak.
Gu Juntao quickly went to his mother's side, "Mom, I didn't mean that, don't cry!"
"It's your wife who's instigating you against me!"
Yang Hongying also cried, "No, Mom, that's really not what I meant..."
Wang Guihua said, "No need to say anything, Gu Juntao, just care for her from now on! Pretend I'm dead!"
"No, Gu Juntao, go and talk to your mom properly."
Gu Juntao now felt like dying, standing there in dejection, head throbbing.
One with depression, the other in menopause, both enough to drive someone crazy.
When Gu Junming and Sun Chan arrived, they walked into this awkward scene, with both women crying continuously. Gu Juntao rubbed his forehead, clueless about what to do.
Gu Junming said, "Why don't you all eat something? We still have some dumplings. Try to eat something. You all... Be well, you're family after all." He wasn't good at pep talks, so this was quite an attempt for him.
"I don't want to eat," Yang Hongying sobbed, "I can't stomach it, Juntao, you eat with Mom."
"Think about your baby," Gu Juntao held her hand with sincerity, "Listen and eat well."
Yang Hongying thought about her baby and eventually agreed, allowing Sun Chan to place a plate of dumplings and a cup of milk beside her.
Seeing her eat, Gu Juntao finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Wang Guihua, witnessing this, felt a stabbing sorrow and turned to leave.
Sun Chan stopped her, "Auntie, please eat something too."
"I can't eat, and don't pretend to care," Wang Guihua brushed her off and left.
Gu Juntao and Gu Junming frowned together, what was she implying? Was asking her to eat a meal pretending to care?
Yang Hongying felt so down, though her stomach rumbled with hunger, she found herself unable to eat.
Sun Chan waved her hand, "It's all right, I'll persuade her to eat. You all really shouldn't be so upset."
Sun Chan followed Wang Guihua out, seeing her standing in the corridor wiping tears, overwhelmed with grievance.
Sun Chan approached and said, "Auntie, don't worry. They're all concerned about you but just don't know how to say it. If you keep not eating, your son will feel bad, and Yang Hongying won't be able to eat either. For your grandchild, please give them another chance."
Sun Chan lowered her stance, regaining Wang Guihua's sense of dignity.
By then, Gu Juntao had also been sent out by his wife, holding a meal, "Mom, let me take you back to your room to eat."
"Okay, I get it, I will eat." Wang Guihua said, then went straight to her room.
Gu Juntao accompanied his mother for a meal, soothing her all along, finally getting her to have a good meal.
Sun Chan and Gu Junming upstairs saw that both the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had eaten, finally feeling relieved.
Gu Junming checked his watch, "It's late, why not stay over tonight? We have a guest room."
Sun Chan nodded, "All right."
It was her first time staying here, and she felt a bit embarrassed.
Sun Chan followed Gu Junming to a guest room on the first floor. Though small, it was decorated warmly, with pink and floral sheets, bordered with white lilac flowers, of good quality.
Sun Chan curiously asked him, "You actually keep such bed sheets for guests?"
Gu Junming smiled, "I just picked them out for you. I bought them long ago, thinking maybe, someday, you might need them."
Sun Chan blushed, "Well, thank you."
