"Go to bed early and wake up in the middle of the night thinking about you, unable to fall asleep."
Hearing little Otto's words, Lu Mian sighed softly, the helplessness in his eyes melting into warmth as he reached out to rub his soft golden head.
"I'll make sure to explain everything to you in advance next time, so you won't worry anymore."
"...Okay."
"Now," Lu Mian reached to pull the blanket over him, "let's get some sleep first, yeah?"
Upon hearing this, little Otto's fair and pretty face turned slightly red, but he temporarily ignored the tempting suggestion. "Where did you go last night?"
"I didn't do much. Just broke the leg of that arrogant bastard who tried to bully you yesterday," Lu Mian said casually.
And just as he finished speaking, a flurry of gossip came in from the direction of the window.
"Hey, did you hear? There's a strange peacock wandering the estate!"
"Oh!?"
"Haha, I'm kidding. Actually, the eldest son was spouting nonsense last night, yelling about the heroes of the world. The idiot tried to leap off a ledge like an eagle, and boomβbroke a leg."
"Oh!? That's way more interesting than a peacock!"
"Right? Hahaha..."
As the gossip faded into the distance, Lu Mian wiped his face and exhaled a long, deep breath.
"This is the best method I could think of. He's in trouble now, and he can't act all high and mighty anymore."
Scolding the world's heroes? Just breaking one leg is enough to humble him into silence.
Before he heals, his life's going to be hell. And if he does heal, well... he'll be disqualified from competing for the position of Overseer of Schicksal.
And whether he can heal or not? That's irrelevant.
Lu Mian had long made peace with that outcome. At least now, the bastard can't lift his hand against Otto again.
He explained all this to little Otto, only to find the boy hadn't responded β instead, he felt a chill run down his back.
Originally, little Otto had been on the verge of falling asleep after getting his answer.
"This child..." Lu Mian murmured gently, gazing at Otto's peaceful sleeping face.
He then picked him up, placed him gently into bed, tucked the blanket around him tightly, and sat down in the chair beside him to admire the scene.
Is an unfortunate childhood the continuation of nightmares and suffering β or the turning point where love is born? ]
You've asked yourself this question more than once β but never found a clear answer. ]
Now, it finally seems like the answer is emerging. ]
You don't dare claim to be better than anyone else β but you sincerely want Otto, the young Schicksal heir, to be happy. ]
And that sentiment, whether directly or not, gave rise to the famous maxim five centuries later: *"Fight for all that is beautiful in the world!"* ]
[...]
You spent time with Otto, sometimes chatting, sometimes fiddling with the plane, sometimes just looking out at the endless sky.
Those were slow, simple days β yet filled with pure joy and a kind of happiness that felt too fragile to touch. ]
[...But lately, you keep feeling like you've forgotten something important. ]
What was it...? You couldn't say.
The unease of forgetting and neglect lingered in your heart β until it was blown wide open by a familiar and beautiful "accident." ]
Midday.
The sky was crystal clear, the sunlight soft and golden like falling grains of sand. Everything was bathed in gentle warmth.
The breeze danced across the grass, rustling leaves and brushing cheeks like the rhythm of a silent poem.
After several improvements, the wooden airplane β carrying the dreams of two boys β soared higher than ever before.
Maybe this time, it would not only fly over the Apocalis estate walls β but even reach the unknown blue sky no one had touched yet.
Lu Mian and little Otto's thoughts were completely in sync.
But in the next second β both of them froze.
The airplane, instead of soaring straight up, curved suddenly in the air β turning away from the Apocalis compound wall and instead flying directly toward the *lower* wall separating Apocalis and Kaslana.
It cleared the lower wall in one smooth arc β and then dived at a sharp angle.
"WhooshβTHUD!"
"Owwwww!"
A delicate, unmistakably *girl's* yelp came from the other side of the wall.
Lu Mian: (. _.)
Little Otto: o_0
"...Did we accidentally install 'enemy detection' on that plane or something?"
"How could such a feature possibly exist?"
The airplane's cursed trajectory had to be put aside for now. After all, both boys had improved the plane too much, making it more powerful β and dangerous.
And it didn't just hit anyone.
This time, it was... a little girl.
No, no β no more hurting innocent bystanders!
Lu Mian quickly moved to climb over the wall and check.
But before he could do so, a small, dainty figure appeared at the top of the low wall β swaying slightly, eyes a little dazed, but still waving at Otto cheerfully.
"Hey, um... is *this* yours?"
The girl's hair was whiter than snow. Her blue eyes pierced the clear sky like sapphires, and her long hair, tied in twintails, gave her a clean, elegant yet mischievous aura.
She wore a specially made children's Valkyrie trainee uniform β one that carried both holiness and innocence.
A warm breeze passed gently over her forehead, lifting a strand of white hair β revealing the red bump on her smooth skin where she'd been hit.
She held up the fully intact airplane model in one hand, wiped the tears from her eyes with the other, and gave a sweet, bright smile.
"My name's Kallen β Kallen Kaslana! Did you make this thing? It flew really, *really* high!"
Seeing her appear like this, Lu Mian β who had already turned invisible the moment *Little Kallen* showed up β was genuinely stunned.
Hit by such a heavy thing from such a height β and she could *still* laugh?
As expected of Kallen. As expected of a *Kaslana*.
She's really built different...
...Wait. Hopefully she won't end up being just a glutton for food later, right?
While Lu Mian was still spiraling internally, Otto was face-to-face with little Kallen β and looking deeply uneasy.
He had heard those words she said somewhere before...
Was she here for revenge?
After a moment's thought, he nodded slightly. "Yeah. That plane's mine."
"Wow! You're amazing! I bet you'll be a *great inventor* one day!"
With that, little Kallen climbed down the wall and walked straight up to Otto β unfazed by the wheelchair or anything else β her face glowing.
"Great inventor! Let's be friends! Let's save the world together!"
Under the golden sunlight, the girl extended her hand and her heart to him.
That kind of purity β that strange mix of kindness and grand dreams β meant nothing to someone with an empty soul.
Otto should have felt guilt, or at least shame. But instead, he felt something else.
He thought about what someone had once said, then asked her with his usual calmness, "Why do you want to be friends with me?"
Was it because of his skills? His usefulness? Her own ideals?
Otto was already forming the answer in his mind.
But little Kallen's reply caught him completely off guard.
"Um... What's your name?"
"...Eh? Otto. Otto Apocalis."
"I want to be friends with you... because you're *Otto*."
"..."
The future Overseer of Schicksal stared blankly at the pure smile of the young saint before him β and felt something tremble in his long-frozen heart.
