Despite all the immense hardships, your experiment with Otto continued β€” and ultimately achieved success.

Why?

Didn't Otto ever consider participating in human experiments?

No. He had thought about it more than once.

But he couldn't.

But he couldn't...

That path was one of no return β€” the kind that, once stepped on, could never be turned back from.

From the moment he injected that first dose of experimental serum into your body, Otto's relationship with human experimentation was sealed. It was as if the whole world heard him declare that you both β€” he and you β€” were pancakes. Big pancake, little pancake.

All of your efforts, your shared suffering, your love and struggle β€” everything would be for nothing.

Like Sisyphus pushing the stone up a hill... even if no one ever saw, even if no one laughed, it would still just be a cosmic joke in the end.

All the pain you both endured β€” it was like an umbrella shielding Otto from the downpour of the mundane world. But it was also a chain, shackling him from ever acting recklessly again.

As if he had never once regretted meeting you.

Otto Apocalypse never regretted respecting your wish to go through with such an absurd, immature experiment.

He only hated himself β€” hated his own powerlessness, hated that he let you suffer so much in it.

But you were different.

You thought that taking medicine six times a day was still not enough.

If you doubled it, maybe... maybe both of you could escape that cycle sooner.

Your existence only lasts for the next four years.

All of Lu Mian's thoughts halted in an instant. He lowered his head, gazing at Kallen as her emotions slowly began to settle. He loosened his embrace, and spoke gently:

"Promise me β€” don't doubt Otto anymore, okay?"

"As for what we do now… I already have a plan. But what matters more is what *you* want to do, Kallen. Choose what you believe is right, and I'll support you no matter what."

Kallen slowly lifted her head upon hearing that.

Their gazes locked β€” her deep ocean-blue eyes reflecting in his like ink spilled in water.

After a long, long pause...

"I believe the root of everything lies in that purple box," she said. "If we can take it from Schicksal and seal it permanently, things will get better."

Kallen's voice was unwavering. Her resolve was clear β€” she was ready to fulfill the heavy legacy of Kaslana, to serve as the shield of the people.

She was prepared to sever everything β€” to leave her home and past behind without hesitation.

Yet her answer... didn't quite match that level of awareness and resolve.

What is this so-called "purple box" that Schicksal uses for human experiments?

They claim it's all to fight the Honkai, to save humanity.

But that's just hollow rhetoric.

Even if the entire Kaslana family were wiped out, you could still count on your fingers the number of people willing to fight and die against the Honkai.

"As for 'everyone'…"

Launching wars of aggression and then issuing indulgences afterward β€” that's not for everyone.

In that context, "everyone" isn't general. It's specific. Convenient.

That lofty "righteousness" is nothing more than a filthy veil hiding Schicksal's ugly ambition and greedy desire.

Would things truly improve just by taking the purple box away?

No.

The experiments would only become more inhumane.

The root of the problem hasn't been resolved.

But even so... you were satisfied with Kallen's answer.

You already had a complete plan for Schicksal. You just hadn't enacted it yet.

Asking Kallen was never about receiving a flawless solution.

What you wanted... was the process of her answer.

Because you won't always be around. You won't always be able to help her, to guide her, to make decisions for her.

She needs to learn to make choices on her own.

She needs to learn to walk on her own.

Even if she's not there yet, even if she still stumbles β€” it's already a good enough beginning.

Move forward. No matter how broken the road, I'll be with you.

Lu Mian told Kallen this with calm certainty.

And somehow, that simple, unwavering support β€” without any expectations β€” hit a soft, vulnerable place in Kallen's heart.

She couldn't resist. She leaned into his arms again.

Lu Mian gently patted her back, then reached out with his other hand and quietly arranged everything.

He made sure the guards and even the unconscious Priest Viktor would remain trapped in their dreams β€” nightmares, never waking again.

Those few girls, mutilated and ruined… their lives were already over. Lu Mian couldn't save them. But he could give them peaceful, beautiful dreams to die in.

Finally, only the purple box remained β€” that cursed artifact that reeked of corruption.

Lu Mian stared at it for a long time before deciding to tightly wrap it in chains mimicking the form of Judas β€” just in case it leaked.

After all was said and done, he gently brushed Kallen's long white hair and gave a teasing smile:

"All right, all right. How old are you now? Still acting this shy? Are you planning to never get married?"

"I still need to go talk to Otto. Want to come with me?"

Kallen used to pout at you, too.

You never had a clear opinion about it.

But now... you kind of want her to pout again.

After all...

You also want to pat Otto's head again.

Ever since you realized he had become a man β€” had grown up β€” you'd been restraining yourself, rarely touching him anymore.

But if you don't do it now, there might not be another chance.

"...I'm not getting married. Unless…"

Kallen's cheeks flushed red as she stepped away from Lu Mian's embrace and muttered shyly.

Her voice was soft β€” but not that soft.

Lu Mian blinked in confusion. "Huh?"

Kallen exhaled lightly, suppressing the lingering warmth in her chest, and quickly switched back to seriousness:

"Nothing. I said we should go find Otto quickly."

"Oh."

Lu Mian responded with a simple nod and turned away.

Kallen gave one last lingering glance to the basement β€” the place she wanted most to forget β€” and branded it into her memory.

Then she left.

Without looking back.

------------------------

Otto was still lying at his desk, eyes fixed on the pot of green lilies.

He had been watching them for a long time.

Then β€” footsteps. Familiar ones.

He didn't turn around. He already knew.

Kallen must have seen the truth about Schicksal.

Lu Mian quietly confirmed his unspoken thoughts as she approached from behind and gently smoothed his unruly golden hair.

Feeling the warmth in her fingers, Otto slowly rose, turning to face her.

"So... she plans to leave with that black box," he said. "And you're going with her?"

"Mm." Lu Mian nodded, her hand never stopping β€” as if afraid her palm might lose its warmth. "Do you want to come too?"
